FHGC Board Highlights:
Second Season of National Grid
Gas Line Upgrades Wrapping Up; Will Be Returning Next Spring
| | | |
We understand that the ongoing gas line work in our community has been a significant inconvenience for some residents. While many streets were partially blocked or closed for extended periods, we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this necessary upgrade to the infrastructure beneath our roadways.
As we approach the conclusion of this year's gas line work, the contractors have informed us that there is one more year of essential work ahead in the Gardens. While our streets have been bustling with activity from Hallen Construction, Tully Construction, Con Edison, and National Grid trucks, staff and equipment, we are optimistic about the long-term benefits this project will bring, including enhanced infrastructure and improved safety for all homeowners.
Once each section is thoroughly tested and home connections are completed, you can expect the trucks and excavation equipment to clear out. This season's efforts have focused on the east side of Ascan Avenue, involving crucial tasks such as excavating our roadways, laying new pipes (while older existing pipes will remain), creating gas connections, odorizing the new lines from the existing main lines, and testing the newly installed systems before connecting them to residences. Please rest assured that we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for all residents.
Since the contractors will need to gain entry to your home to complete the final connection, we encourage you to stay engaged with the Gardens office throughout this process; they are there to support you with any questions or concerns you may have.
On a positive note, the streets that were dug up last summer received much needed paving in late July of this year; next summer this year's torn up roadways will be addressed as well.

FHGC Membership Committee Plans Olivia Park Community Event
for September 21st
| Weather permitting, the FHGC Membership Committee has arranged for all Gardens residents to gather as a community and enjoy a special evening of music on Sunday, September 21st, starting at 5 pm. More details will be forthcoming. No tickets necessary - just pull out a blanket and join your neighbors in Olivia Park. | FHGC Budget Meeting - September 25th | |
Every fall, the community gathers to review the Garden's budget for the coming year. Since the FHGC's fiscal year runs from October to September, this gathering takes place before a new accounting period begins. Put September 25th on your calendar now - meeting will take place at the Community House at 7 pm.
Copies of the proposed 2025-2026 budget will be mailed to each homeowner in early September, but additional copies will be on hand at the meeting as well. Please note: the Board accepts written comments, suggestions, and questions on budgetary matters from our community members during the annual Budget Meeting.

Illegal Parking in the Gardens:
How You Can Help
| |
For nearly two decades, Knights agents have worked to keep our streets free from illegal parking with Ivan leading the charge in patrolling those streets, supported by the reliable team of Corey and Mel. Their collaboration with our Gardens office staff ensures a coordinated approach to monitoring and addressing parking concerns effectively.
In addition to reporting any suspicious vehicles, residents can significantly contribute to Knights' ongoing efforts by being sure to follow the parking program protocol. This means ensuring that any time a resident, or a guest of a resident, has a vehicle parked on a Gardens' street, that vehicle has a decal or valid parking pass clearly displayed. You can obtain valid guest passes for your address from the FHGC office. Did you know that you can also get a temporary pass from them if your car with the decal is in the “shop”? Furthermore, residents can purchase a week’s vacation pass for $75, should they not have a current decal but need their vehicle on the street for a stretch of time while they are on vacation.
As the contractor entrusted with maintaining resident parking rules, the Knights agents are skilled in managing sensitive interactions with vehicle owners, ensuring that any enforcement actions are conducted calmly and effectively. We encourage residents to refrain from engaging in confrontational encounters with violators, as this can complicate situations that are already tense. If anyone feels they have been booted unfairly, they can obtain an appeals form from the Knights agent which will be reviewed by the FHGC Parking Committee.
The FHGC office can be contacted at info@fhgc.org, or at 718-268-2420.

Groups Promoting Closure of
Austin Street to Auto Traffic;
Raising Concerns about
Traffic Impact to Gardens' Streets
| |
While it is easy to perceive Forest Hills Gardens as a timeless enclave, the reality is that our beloved community faces ongoing external challenges that requires attention and action almost daily by the Board and the Gardens office staff.
One issue that is being closely watched is the push by various groups to convert Austin Street into a pedestrian plaza. A Community Board 6 sub-committee has been created to explore the issue by the CB6 Transportation, Public Transit, and Street Safety Committee.
The concerns surrounding the potential impact of increased traffic on our Gardens' neighborhood are indeed valid and deserve our collective attention. Understanding how such changes may affect street traffic and the daily lives of residents is crucial for maintaining the integrity of our community.

Legacy Parks
Showing Progress
| Our parks have been reopened and are looking beautiful and green again. The early summer rain certainly helped as did the treatments and TLC they received by both the FHGC crew and the Gardens' contracted landscape service. | |
Citi Bike Is Coming to Forest Hills this fall; Feedback Map is Open for
Station Siting Suggestions
| |
The Department of Transportation is collecting information about the future location on Austin Street for Citi bikes this fall. Don't hesitate to add your own dot even if someone has one there already. Include a comment about why you would want to see one there or not.
Another thought is to really drill down and get specific about where on the street (or sidewalk) the racks should be positioned and why, such as suggesting corners that need daylighting.

Children's Day:
Take Two!
| |
The Gardens' beloved Children's Day, run by the Celebrations Committee of Forest Hills Gardens, will make a second attempt to get this favorite neighborhood gathering off the ground. Saturday, September 13th is slotted for another try since the June date was washed out.
Please refer to the June newsletter for all the planned activities for this special day!

Woken up by loud squawking? A majestic call? A hoarse screech that lasts for two to three seconds?
Our newest residents, baby red-tailed hawks, can often be found hanging out atop Gardens' chimneys or in many of our tall trees (like the one photographed above from a Goodwood Road homeowner's yard).
Click here to hear their LOUD communication.

Red-Tailed Hawks:
Happy Gardens Residents

They knew a good thing when they found it! The hawks have chosen to have another batch of babies this year in the Gardens - three baby hawks have actually been spotted in our tall trees (they can lay 1-5 eggs each May). Hawks are opportunistic hunters and are attracted to areas with readily available food sources, such as bird feeders or areas with abundant small animal populations.
While strolling the neighborhood, you cannot help but hear the loud calls of these birds - louder than most. Possibly you searched the skies. Hard to locate since almost always on the highest perch, the red tailed hawks have made the tall Gardens' trees and chimneys - and even our cars occasionally - their hangout. While Steve Silberberg used a long lens to capture the large avian beauty in a video, Kayur Patel captured a shot at eye level.

Spotted in
Flagpole Green
| Gray squirrels with a red/orange tail like this one photographed in Flagpole Green are apparently not rare in New York City parks and suburban areas, but nonetheless not common in Forest Hills Gardens. This is not a different species of squirrel from the ones we usually see in the Gardens, but a gray squirrel with a variation in its coloration due to genetic factors. | FHGC Nominating Committee Application Deadline - Monday, September 1st | |
Annually, the Nominating Committee eagerly awaits recommendations from our valued property owners for potential candidates to serve on the FHGC Board, ideally candidates that appreciate the rich history and unparalleled beauty of the Gardens, a community steeped in significance.
Whether the individual chooses to self-nominate or put forth a deserving member of our community, the process involves completing a questionnaire to highlight the candidate's passions and skills followed by a brief meeting with the Nominating Committee for an interview.
Board involvement presents a rewarding opportunity to contribute to our storied community's legacy and forge new connections while engaging in meaningful volunteer work. In fact, volunteerism is at the heart of our community, and by participating in the board's activities, residents can make a meaningful impact that enhances the quality of life for all. We encourage residents to step forward and get involved.

Same determent issues remain. Doors of autos and homes need to be locked; package pickup arranged. By taking these simple yet effective steps, we not only protect our own belongings but also contribute to the overall safety and integrity of Forest Hills Gardens.
Whenever you see suspicious behavior, be sure to call 911 first, followed then by Excel Security. While Excel Security is not authorized to act as law enforcement, it does coordinate with the 112th Precinct, and along with our residents, serves as our eyes and ears for our neighborhood.
